We also examine how the robot can avoid obstacles like power cords, furniture legs, and pet waste.

The most advanced robots can map out several floors and can recognize landmarks such as windows and doors. The most advanced models such as the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, have a dual-sensor navigation system that uses the LIDAR sensor to map out the room and a structured light camera on the front of the robot to identify objects in real-time. This lets the S8 to avoid common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords, and it can store up to four different floor maps within its internal memory.

The more affordable models don't have this type of object detection and rely on bump sensors, which aren't as accurate. In my testing they cut right through cords, dog poop, and even the shoes that were placed in the middle of the room. The most affordable choice, the Dreametech D10+, is an exception to this. It has excellent carpet, hard floor, tangle, and hair pickup. It also has an auto empty score that is near-perfect.

Another feature that is important is a huge onboard dustbin which doesn't have to be manually empty, and for the models that mop, a tank of water which can store weeks of cleaning sessions. The Karcher RCV 5 comes with this and a big enough footprint that it can go under furniture but not so big that it can't fit into the nook between your toilet and bathtub.

Apps

Robot vacuums are similar to upright models, and it takes lots of technology to get them up to speed. There are many choices available in a market that is mature. Even the top models require interaction from their users, especially when it comes time to schedule cleaning, make a an outline of your home and install virtual barriers.

Some models are able to detect dirt levels and alter the level of cleaning. They also can detect objects that aren't part of your home flooring, like toys, furniture and food bowls.

Some robot vacuums come with additional pet-friendly features. These include a water dispenser that is used to clean floors, and an HEPA filtration system that reduces allergens, such as pet dust. They may also offer an operation that is quieter, which can minimize the amount of noise generated during cleaning.

Robot vacuums with the ability to map are a great option for pet owners, since they're designed to evaluate your home and develop a plan of attack in accordance with the layout and the obstacles in every room.
